Harper is a legitimized bastard of the king of Tharenell, primed to be the next spymaster, taking over after her Uncle Henry. But before what may be their biggest operation yet the spy they plan to plant into the enemy empire is fatally wounded. With nobody else having the knowledge of the ciphers created for the operation Harper's Uncle offers her as a replacement bride to the Emperor of Fareithyn to salvage all the work they've done.

But Elias isn't what Harper expected and the closer she gets to completing their plan, the more she gets to know the Emperor as a man and not as a figurehead of war, the more she begins to doubt her purpose.
