CARSON CREST BRIDGE
"Yes, Mother, it's just a little rain," Nathaniel says into the phone, his voice calm despite the downpour soaking him to the bone.
He walks steadily across Carson Crest Bridge when a faint whimper catches his ear-a fragile sound from the shadows. He halts, tuning in with his supernatural senses, and steps closer toward the source. Blood. The moment his eyes catch the glint of crimson, his nostrils flare instinctively. The scent is thick, sweet, and dangerously inviting. His eyelids flutter shut for a second as he wrestles down the craving clawing at his throat. He swallows hard, forcing composure.
Beneath a flickering, broken street lamp lies a young woman in a tattered pale pink dress. Blood seeps from the back of her head, mingling with the rainwater as it flows across the slick surface of the bridge. She's still alive-barely-her soft, pained whimpers confirming it.
Even with her face turned away, something in Nathaniel's chest twists. Pity, unexpected and strong. He can't leave her here. If he does... she won't make it.
