The house was nothing but bones now. Charred wood. Crumbled stone. Ashes scattered like ghosts across the floor. Every breath I took carried the bitter taste of smoke, though the fire had died decades ago.

It was the perfect place for a killing. Quiet. Empty. Forgotten.

I stepped across the wreckage, eyes sharp, and focused steadily. Tonight was supposed to belong to me. My target. My mission. My silence.

Then a voice rose from the shadows. Low. Calm. Unwanted.

"What are you doing here?"

I froze. My head snapped toward the sound. Out of the dark, Liam Kaiser emerged, his eyes catching the faint light from a broken window.

I narrowed mine. "That's my question. What are you doing here?"

The air between us tightened, the silence heavy.

Finally, I said it. "I'm here to kill someone. Someone important."

That was when I heard it-soft at first, then clearer-the crunch of footsteps pressing into the ash.

Shapes moved. Five men stepped out of the gloom, surrounding us. Guns lifted. Smiles carved onto their faces like they already knew how this story ended.

I glanced at Liam. He glanced back. We didn't need words. This just turned into something else.

Then a new voice filled the ruins. Smooth. Measured. Dangerous.

"Well, well. What a surprise... to see you here, mafia lord."

My stomach dropped. I turned toward the figure stepping into the faint light.

The world narrowed. My throat tightened.
"Dad?" I whispered.

The word echoed into the hollow house, vanishing into smoke and ash.
