Disclaimer: This novel involves abuse, sexual abuse and suicide. A destiny I never chose. A life I never wanted. A heart I swore never to give again. Death should have been my release. Her Last Hope
Her POV: He was heartless, ruthless, cruel, calculating... there was not even one ounce of humanity in him-no trace of empathy or mercy, no place for love or kindness in his heart. He ruined me, humiliated me, crushed me... But he was powerful, strong, terrifying... no one dared to cross him or stand in his way. And so, I was left alone to bear the consequences of things I hadn't done. I promised I would avenge my dignity and my hard work, one way or another... But fate had other plans. He claimed that he loved me, but his actions revealed his true colors. And I- I never thought I was capable of hating someone so deeply, but I hated him with everything I had left in me. His POV: I was the king of the world-the most powerful man you'd ever meet. Cold and merciless, no one dared stand against me. Everyone sought my approval. They feared my wrath and worshipped my name. Everyone... except her. She was the woman who made my heart beat for the first time. The woman who looked past my power and saw the man beneath it. The only one who wanted nothing from me, while I wanted everything from her. But I couldn't blame her for despising me. Not after everything I had done. For the first time in my life, I was wrong. The two weren't home to witness the tragedy of losing both their parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles who were attending their party because they were in their tree house in the woods. They come back for some cake, and as soon as they realized what was happening they grabbed as much as they could of their belongings and booked it deeper into the woods searching for shelter from the zombies. "You trust me, don't you?" he says with a smile, that smile. It had fooled everyone, even me at some point, and for the first time I want to scream with rage and shake the earth to the core. "Give me a hug," he says pulling me out of the chair that feels like a rock underneath me. I am as stiff as a board as his hands circle me, making me feel worse than dirt. His hands reach between my thighs and I want to plunge a knife deep through his chest. The only thing stopping me is, the knife is no where near. I pull back and I don't try to hide the anger in my eyes. I want him to see it. To know that I am coming for him. Rape is chanted repeatedly in my mind, reminding of the lies I just told and the false accusations I am throwing on innocent people. I've been on the run for three years. I'm not the first, but I certainly won't be the last. For as long as I can remember, I had been experimented on, drugged to the brink of insanity, and tortured by someone I thought was my family. Boy, was I wrong. This isn't one of those stories where I suddenly get a huge boost of courage and defeat the bad guys then live happily ever after. I don't believe in that stuff anymore. Instead, I was a coward, and ran for my life, for my freedom, because I was too afraid to stand and fight and risk losing control like the monster they had created me to be. I've been too many people, have moved too many times. Now, I wonder if I will finally be able to find a place to call home... I won't allow myself to be captured before I even have a chance at that. They said it would only feel like a moment. Close my eyes, drift off, and wake beneath another sun. I believed them. We all did. The world was ending, and The Passage Program was our last chance to save what was left of it. Sleep through the ruin. Wake to a beginning. I don't remember falling asleep. Just the weight of the air, the pressure in my chest, the feeling that something inside me was... slipping. If I'm awake now, why can't I move? If I'm alive, why does everything feel so still?
