Nova is tired, but she doesn't let it show. After years of playing mother to her young twin sisters, years of overexerting herself in school, at home, and at work, she can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel: college. She just has to get through one more summer of work. Three more months, and she's free.

But the other kids who work at her country club are...unusual. Her fellow lifeguard is strangely agile in the water, and the reticent girl who works at the day camp seems to have it out for her. When she follows them to a clearing in the woods and watches them walk through a magical portal, its edges woven together by the eerie light of a lunar rainbow, it's all Nova can do to keep her sanity from snapping.

They went home, and though Nova never had any mind to follow after them, she eventually finds herself in their world of darkness and magic. She has to work hard to keep from dying, and of course, there's a mystical war on the horizon. Nova wants to go home, but she's trapped.

"What are you?" she finds herself asking, watching as they produce long, sharp claws and grow ten feet tall. With a low woosh, wings bloom from their backs, reaching up to tickle the stars and catch the moonlight.

"I believe in your world..." her friend turns, eyes wide and glittering. "We are called fairies."
