Dan still thinks that maybe he's slightly crazy. He's also slightly annoyed, because Suki has escaped the house and is roaming wild through the streets of New York. He breaks out of his family's apartment to go searching for her, and meets a boy called Phil Lester; who can not only see Dan's cat, but has a cat of his own. They move in together as adults, and live a harmonious life. Dan thinks everything is perfect, but he doesn't know that Phil's mental health has taken a turn for the worse.
