A trial is defined as a test of the performance, qualities, and suitability of someone or something. It can occur as a test of one's abilities, strength, and humanity. This trial happens at a certain point in a person's life usually around the age of eighteen. The age of change.
Emily must go through this trial to find her place in the world. Where does she belong? It can only be determined by the life threatening test that is tradition for a world she didn't know existed. She finds that this world holds her answers and a change of life.
