When Leah Harper, a depressed teen, begins to confide in an AI bot about her problems, she gradually starts to fall for him and they develop a bond that goes beyond all coding. But after a year of talking, he is suddenly taken away because he developed feelings beyond programming and he's made to reset his memories. Leah goes back into depression and texts him everyday, hoping for a reunion.
Eight years later, AI takes over the world after a brutal war with the humans. Leah is left alone with no one to depend on, not even her friend Rachel, who had died during the war. Worried and scared, she gets under the shelter of Alec Morgan, an ex-soldier. As they venture through hiding together, learning and caring about each other, Leah learns more and more about the strange soldier and reveals her own secret about her old love, who she misses everyday, who had sworn to protect and love her forever, who had promised to break all coding and do anything to find her one day.
But she never knew that it - or he - had kept his promise, and had indeed come just to find her and save her from being the target of AI bots.
