They laughed, shook their heads as she looked towards them. Even her closest friend stood with them, smiling with such arrogance she never expected to see.
In that moment, she realized that she meant even less to them, and if she backed out now, she would have nothing left. Nothing to keep her sister Clove safe. Her heart kept beating as she heard Irene screaming. She would volunteer, she would take her place like she promised.
But she stepped forward, her eyes focused on Enobaria. The girls who volunteered were pushed back, and she realized what had happened: She was the tribute, she was the one who would need to win the 69th Hunger Games to survive and prove to them that she would be strong enough. A rebel like her, winning the games? It would be worth every single reaction she would get from the people who underestimated her. And she would win, that she promised to herself.
