He glared at her. "I-I-" The word broke apart on his tongue.

She didn't laugh. She didn't look away. Instead, she reached into her apron and pulled out a piece of dried fig, stolen from the pantry.

"I don't talk much either," she shrugged. "People don't like it when I do."
