Every Dagerstanteen knows Rhylent dislikes humans. In fact, the alien isn't a fan of ninety percent of the other species in the universe. But all that changes when he refuels his spaceship and begrudgingly accepts two slaves. Although it would make more sense to kill these silly creatures, oddly, he cannot bring himself to do it. So... what now? For the last fifty human years, Chasm has been a slave and a laborer for whatever alien owns him. Chasm and his only friend, Norwell, get bought, sold, and trafficked again. Now, stuck in a slave market, Chasm faces that their latest master has decided that they're a waste. Just as Chasm and Norwell are to be incinerated, an ill-tempered Dagerstanteen saves his life. Chasm isn't sure what will happen to him and Norwell, but he can be sure no alien will ever want a human as damaged as him. If Norwell and Chasm can escape the prickly alien who now possesses them, they will be free. That's what he wants, isn't it? To be free?
