Delgen. That's the world I live in.
Do I like Delgen?
Can't say I do. After all, the place stinks. It's cold and danger is always around the corner. In fact, the reason humanity has survived is because of the four Cigam jewels. One crystal protects one of the great cities. The ruby protects Cogenth, the city of strength. A sapphire protects Allevith, the city of healing. Asserth, the city of confidence is guarded by the emerald. And Fondeth is under the care of the jewel of love, a pink diamond.

Then, there's the rogue city. 
Under the guidance of Lord Enince, the city isn't protected by a jewel. I'm Birchen. I'm a spy for the rogue city.

And this time, my mission is to steal all of the four jewels of Cigam.

This is my journey. This is my quest. This is my adventure.

Esme had one big fear in life: being captured as a thief by the city's guardsmen and being executed for her crimes, and that so heavily weighed on her mind that she increased her risks by being distracted in the middle of a heist. That's when she runs into Althalos Fourthborn: Inner Circle Guardsman, one of the many princes of the realm, an Aelif (Dark Elf, local dialect)...and her betrothed by treaty. (That was something her almost human mind could not handle.) So she calls off the heist, gets demoted into a far more risky job, learns the true bitter depth of what this treaty's bond is like, and lands safely by her prince's side....sort of. There were people who still wanted to end her life, even if she was in what most people would call a Happily Ever After. That and her prince had his own living fears that were gnawing at any chance they had. That and she might just lose her mind from everyday boredom. But the one she couldn't wrap her all-too human mind around was that she would one day grow wings and fly away from her almost Happily Ever After to live in a hive with ancestors more alien than a hottie with pointed ears and abandonment issues. ~~~~ Yes, there are adult themes in this book, and difficult subjects, but nothing is excessive, as this is probably my simplest story. So, trigger warnings: A history of assault. Occasional vulgar language. References to partial cannibaliam. Extremely mild, light, and rare sex scenes. At least one elitist mentality. ~~~~ Ages of MC/ML: Esme: Apparent age of 24, roughly 20 years lived (mostly human). Althalos: Apparent age of 30, roughly 65 years lived (Elves mature slower).

Dozens of crime families constantly trying to take the throne, as well as corruption lurking around every corner, do not aid in that fact at all. Salem is offered a job to help with an investigation that could benefit his future career astronomically. He thinks it's a win-win situation, he gets the recognition he desires, and the streets will be that much safer. It's all black and white to him, easy to understand. He likes the order, and he craves the accomplishment of defeating bad with good. It's all black and white. Until he gets caught in the grey. I roll my eyes and move my head away. "Don't do this." He acknowledges what I said but doesn't act on it. He takes his hand and moves it to my jawline, moving my head to him. This causes me to become frantic. I can't get messed over. "Karan, we literally just had this conversation. This isn't fair to me, please don't." His facial features soften completely at my tone and he looks at me genuinely. "I would never." With that he kisses me and my stomach explodes in butterflies, turning over. He moves his hands from the hood of his car to the side of my waist. "That wasn't fake, Tejasswi", his eyes intent on mine against the dark drizzling sky. I can't stop looking at him. She's a soloist who doesn't like help. Especially with a huge mission like this. Will the mission fall through? Or would she need a partner more than ever?
