"Annie Cresta!"

Annie stood frozen, her wide eyes locked on the stage. Mags stepped forward, steady as ever-but I was faster.

"I volunteer!"

The words left my mouth before I could think, cutting through the stunned silence.

Caroline didn't even blink. Instead, her lips curled into a satisfied smile. "Ah, Melody Rivers," she purred. "Back for another round, are we?"

I forced myself to stand tall. "Looks like it," I said evenly, ignoring the weight pressing against my chest.

Mags' hand brushed my arm, hesitant. I met her gaze, saw the sorrow there. Annie was still motionless, lips parted like she wanted to protest.

"It's okay," I tried to tell her.

But it wasn't.

Caroline clapped her hands together. "How thrilling! Will this storm wash you away, or will you rise with the tide?"

I didn't answer. I just stepped onto the stage, knowing the Capitol had already won.
