Dean hesitated before giving him the money. He didn't know why he did it. He could have left John with no car, wallet, and no where to stay the next day.
But Dean had a good heart. And part of him had this endless hope that his father wasn't a truly bad person. That one day he could come around.
And even then, Dean wouldn't be able to live with himself if he left him like that. So with a nod to the older man he left and got in the front seat and they pulled out.
"Dean?" Sam asked nervously.
"Yeah Sammy?" He asked.
"Where are we going?" he asked. Sam knew what was happening. He was 12 and smart. But he was still scared, still just a kid.
Dean glanced at him before smiling.
"Where do you want to go?" he asked and Sam shrugged.
"Come on," Dean cleared his throat.
"We can go anywhere you want. Pick a town, and we settle down. You can go to a new school, a good one too. And we can get a good place to stay, not some greasy motel," He said and Sam watched him for a moment.
"Really?" He asked hopeful. Dean felt his eyes water and he quickly wiped them. He didn't know how he would make it work, but he just knew he would.
For Sam.
"Yeah, really," He said and Sam smiled.
