kai had always known that there was something different about them. Not different in a way that needed fixing, just something unspoken, waiting patiently beneath the surface. growing up in a small coastal town, where everyone knew everyone, kai learned early to keep their truth quiet. pronouns were a complicated subject. so we're crushes
it wasn't untill collage, hundreds of miles from home, that kai met jamie-open, unapologetic, and kind. Jamie used they/them pronouns, wore a rainbow patch on her backpack, and spoke in poetry even when just ordering coffee. kai was captivated.
one evening, during a quiet walk under golden streetlights, Jamie turned to kai and asked gently,
"who are you whrn no one's watching?"
the question struck something deep
"I don't know yet," kai admitted. "but I think I want to find out."
Jamie smiled "Then I'll walk with you."
over months kai explored books, art and long talks with Jamie about identity and fluidity and the quiet power of being seen. eventually, kai began using they/them pronouns too. it didn't solve everything. There were akward calls with family, moments of fear, even loneliness. But there was also laughter. freedom. love
And in Jamie's hand, kai found something stronger than fear: the courage to exist as they truly were.
Heads up this story is pretty old and kinda bad so I don't rlly recommend reading😬
Anyway

"P-please, just leave m-me alone," I whisper, mentally slapping myself for stuttering.
"Oh? Does the outcast want to talk?" she asks.

For Jamie, being a senior in high school isn't easy for them. Bullies treat them like trash everyday, and it's even worse when you're the odd one out. Literally, being non-binary in a Christian school. Until a few nice people start reaching out...maybe it won't be so bad...
