This one's for you. May your goose liver pâté be award-winning, your threads impeccably knotted (for communication purposes only, naturally), and your fertilizer always perfectly balanced. And may you always remember that even amidst the chaos of a stolen magical artifact, a good raspberry tart can solve almost any problem (or at least temporarily distract you from the enormity of the task at hand).

The Silent Heir
How far can a broken soul endure? Emma La Larum was a champion, beings that can bring entire armies to their knees. She was the dread that the brave feared, the nightmare that the monsters hid from, and the bane of entire legions. She was an all but a weapon in flesh. But beneath her bloody craft, she was once a girl who sought nothing more but the warmth of family. A warmth she was denied of even in her death. For once, Emma quietly embraces her escape, but even death had betrayed her as she wakes up back to her youthful days. Although her body was healthy and beautiful once more, her mind teeters on the edge of oblivion. Broken and half mad, Emma abandoned her name and family in hopes of finding refuge from the horrors of war, yet it's shadow could never leave her alone. Guardians of the Heart
They say madness runs in the blood. If that's true, then I'm already drowning in it. I dream of cats who speak in riddles, of stars that bleed light, of hearts that throb beneath soil and stone like they're trying to escape. Most nights, I wake up with the echo of a heartbeat in my ears-never mine, always someone else's. Louder. Closer. My aunt says it's just the wind. The others in the village say it's something worse. We don't talk about dreams here. We till the earth, we bake our bread, and we keep our heads down. Dreamers don't last long in places like this. And girls like me-girls who see more than they should, who hear what no one else can-they don't get happy endings. They get whispers. Looks. Doors shut a little too hard. So I've learned to pretend. I smile when I'm supposed to, nod when I'm spoken to. I hide my journal beneath the loose floorboard, the one that creaks only if you step just wrong. No one knows what I write there. No one knows that sometimes, in the quiet, I can feel the weight of a thousand hearts pressing against mine. Longing. Ache. Something else I can't name. Until last night, I thought I was still pretending. Then the cat came. She didn't knock, didn't ask. Just sat on the windowsill like she owned the moonlight and said- "You're late, Inimar. The hearts are dying."

It all began with a moment of... well, let's call it poor judgment. I stumbled upon a cache of pirate paraphernalia, a treasure trove of sorts, hidden in a forgotten corner of the docks. My eyes, like a magpie's, were drawn to a particularly ornate compass, its intricate carvings hinting at untold secrets and, perhaps, a touch of the uncanny. Driven by an irresistible urge to possess this maritime marvel, I absconded with the compass, a decision I now deeply regret. Turns out, it wasn't just any compass; it belonged to a particularly ruthless band of pirates. And now, they want it back. It seems that the compass, far from being a simple navigational tool, is imbued with a potent magic, guiding them to untold riches and, apparently, fueling their insatiable thirst for vengeance. The truth is, I never intended to cause such a ruckus. My only desire was to possess a pretty compass, a relic of the sea that would surely fetch me a little coin. The question now is: how does one outsmart a band of ruthless sea dogs fueled by a desire for vengeance and a mythical compass? I'm not certain, but I'm working on it. Perhaps a clever ruse, a well-placed distraction, or maybe just a really, really fast rowboat. Whatever the solution, I need to act fast. My compass caper has landed me in a storm of trouble, and only time will tell if I can weather it.

Dusty had always wanted an adventure, and she's about to get one she'll never forget, no matter where the future takes her. Stepping out of the palace and into the world to prove herself, she's about to learn that she has skills she never imagined. About how this story will work: Every Friday for several years I've posted a flash fiction story on my blog, Joyously Prolific (http://zette.blogspot.com/). A few times I've written a flash fiction serial which is a series of posts set in the same story universe, each with a cliffhanger ending, just like the old time serial shows (the original Flash Gordon, etc.). When I decided to write Dusty and Her Friends as another of those, I thought it might be fun to post it on Wattpad as well. So look for a new entry every Thursday or Friday. I have not missed a week since I started posting flash fictions on July 27, 2012 so you don't have to worry about the story going unfinished. I see this story as being about 20,000 to 30,000 words when completed. None of the entries will be more than 1,000 words based on the Scrivener word count, so expect Dusty to keep going until at least the end of the year. I hope you enjoy the story!Complet
