A senior in high school, she lives in what appears to be a happy home with her only known relative-her father. Neighbors wave and comment on how lucky she is to have such a "devoted" father. But they don't see what happens once the front door closes.

Behind that door, her life is ruled by fear. Her father's voice, calm and pleasant in public, turns cold and menacing in private. His anger is unpredictable-sometimes sparked by a missed chore, other times by nothing at all. He hits her with whatever's within reach: a belt, a bottle, or his fists. The bruises are common now, strategically hidden under hoodies and jeans.

The emotional wounds run even deeper than the physical ones. She no longer sees herself in the mirror-only a hollow reflection of someone surviving. The house may look happy to outsiders, but to her, it's a prison, and with every passing day, her hope for escape and happiness fades.
