"Mom, I'll be fine. Nothing bad ever happens here." I say this with complete confidence as there hasn't been a murder in Salem in over 20 years. "Okay, well, just let me know as soon as you get back," she replies. 

"I will," I say before hanging up. I put in my AirPods before making a shortcut through the park. Although the music is blasting in my ears, I can't help but feel like someone or something is watching me, so I walk faster. 10 more minutes and I'll be home. 

As I walk down the path, I feel shivers run down my spine, and I quickly turn around. I take out both of my AirPods to hear better. 

Calm down, Letty! You're just being paranoid. And right as I turn back to walk, I feel a sharp sting against my cheek and fall to the ground. My eyes were shut, but as soon as I opened them, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. 

I see what appears to be a person, but its skin is hairless, its ears are pointed, its eyes are bloodshot red, it has claws, and it has razor-sharp teeth. Before I could even scream, it pounced over me and sank its teeth into my neck. 

I let out a blood-curdling scream, but no one could hear.  Soon, I could hear ringing in my ears, and I slowly felt myself slip away.

 Then, I exhale my last breath. My last breath as a human, anyway. Because after this, I am a vampire. Stuck at being forever 17.

This book is one that I wrote in 2018, in my junior and senior years of high school. It felt very important to me at the time of writing, but it doesn't reflect who I am now. It's... not very good. It only sold like two or three copies. This book was edited by my friend B. Fox of Fox Editing. About the book itself, off the back cover: In 2014, the Blood Countess met her end on her farm outside of East St. Louis, Illinois. Her accomplices, however, had successfully evaded the law. Two years later, something sinister has come to a rural Wisconsin community. Nova is a logged-in, nonbinary teenager with an interest in serial killers. Sam is a drug-dealing gearhead preparing to graduate. Meredith is a sheltered, redhead nerd with a tragic backstory. Taka is an edgy white boy with an interest in wolves and a need to seem cool. Can they save those they love? More importantly, can they save themselves? And is that howling in the woods the local wildlife, or is it something far more dangerous? CONTENT WARNINGS: This book contains often graphic depictions of some pretty horrible things. If you are distressed by drug abuse, self-harm, suicide, animal death, sexual abuse, transphobia, racism, ableism, other forms of bigotry, or death, you may want to choose some different reading material.
