Mother was a fierce warrior, a proud Knight of the Empire - or she had been, at least. But she could not embrace Death nor grieve, as she had sworn an Oath, her final tie to the Age that had come to a close: she had to protect the Child, to bring him somewhere safe. 
That was her mission, and in order to fulfil it Mother had to cross a wasteland of ash and ruin, ready to face all kinds of danger, in the blind hope that a safe heaven existed somewhere.
But a shadow trailed her steps, always able to find her. His mission opposed to hers. 
Only one of the two could fulfil their oath, and the Child's life - and maybe much more - depended on it.
