Darkness always remembers. Even if you forget.

When nineteen-year-old Soraya Làzaro loses everything in a fire that leaves her orphaned, marked, and haunted by things she can't explain, a strange invitation arrives in the mail -- an acceptance letter to a college she never applied to, in a town she's never heard of. Desperate to escape the suspicions and whispers that cling to her back home, she packs what's left of her life and heads to Morning Glory College, nestled deep in the fog drenched forests of Rice Hill, Washington.
But Morning Glory is no ordinary school.
Statues seem to watch her. Shadows move when they shouldn't. And the eyes of a dark-haired professor pierce through her like a memory. From the moment she steps onto campus, Soraya is overcome by a strange déjà vu and the feeling she's walked these halls before -- perhaps in another life.
As the veil between past and present seems to unravel, Soraya finds herself drawn into a mystery that spans centuries -- one in which she is both the question, and the answer. Visions of long-dead girls, a journal that writes itself, a vault hidden beneath the chapel...and three powerful beings who all claim to know her -- a demon who swears he loves her, an angel who was sent to observe her, and a man with a serpent's smile who insists they belong together.
In a place where truth is buried beneath stone and blood, Soraya must uncover who she really is, and why something ancient and monstrous is rising beneath the school.
And the deeper she digs, the more she begins to wonder:
Is she here to stop it...or to awaken it?

The world is dying. Heaven and Hell have broken and collapsed, creating a post-apocalyptic landscape that is part purgatory, part platonic world of ideas, blighted by the horrors of the human mind. The sun lies dormant in the east, atop God's tower, while the west is plunged into darkness and haunted by all that lives there. There is no day and night cycle, nothing grows, nothing dies, nothing changes, unless magic is involved. Angels hunt creatures for their blood, to feed it to God so he can finish gestating. Demons kill and destroy aimlessly, their origins inexplicable and unknown. Stranger beings wander the ruins of what's left of the world. Humans need not eat or sleep, caught in a state between life and death. They cannot die or be born naturally, but they can be killed and they can be made. The few that survived with their sanity somewhat intact have locked themselves into warded cities, but their protections are feeble and often ineffective. The Order that united them is long gone, broken into factions known only by the sins for which they have fallen. The Houses that protected them are crumbling, falling into ruin as their members were culled down by angels and demons, as well as their own mad quest to save the world; the Pilgrimage, a vain attempt to steal into Eden and murder God himself. Soon, only the Scions will remain. Those that were left not due to merit, but because they were the last choice for being heroes. Those whose memories and minds are as damaged and eaten through as their world. Those who agreed to take on the mysterious Archons within their bodies and, through that contract, had ancient relics and rituals passed down to them. They converge onto a long forgotten neutral ground, trying to save themselves. A heroic journey through a nightmarish wonderland. A pilgrimage to God's tower, to make the world whole again. To cleanse the world of the horrors infecting it. To kill the God who will doom them all with his birth.

First day of college: blow up a lab, awaken ancient magic, try not to fall for a vampire. ●●● Red Hathaway thought the worst part of her first day of college would be getting lost. Not blowing up the biochemistry lab. But the explosion was no accident-and neither is Red's life. For nineteen years, she believed she was just an ordinary girl navigating the chaos of school, bullies, and late-night movie marathons. But everything changes the moment her skin cracks with magic and something otherworldly stirs inside her. Red isn't human. She never was. Whisked away under moonlight to Mystic Academy, a hidden university for the supernatural elite, Red is thrown into a world pulsing with ancient magic and dark secrets. Elves with sharp smiles, witches who craft storms, vampires who thirst for more than blood-and werewolves who smell fear. Here, the monsters don't hide under beds. They share your dorm. As Red struggles to control her powers, she finds herself drawn to a dangerously irresistible presence: a seductive vampire with secrets written in blood and a gaze that sees straight through her soul. He might be the key to unlocking her past-or the reason she doesn't survive her future. But something darker hunts her. Something hungry. And if Red doesn't uncover who-or what-she really is, this new world might be the death of her. Magic is calling. So is danger. And Red Hathaway is about to find out what happens when both answer at once.

Up until she turned 15, Emma's life was ordinary. Living in Los Angeles, she had a few friends, and loved learning history. She had a fascination with magic growing up, but after elementary, she moved on from the foolish idea, learning the hard way that magic isn't real and that it's only a lie Hollywood had fed her. But her whole perspective shifted again after the passing of her grandpa. She discovered that he had kept a secret from his whole family-that he once was a warlock. He had given up that life when he moved to L.A. in the 1970s, but Emma and her cousin Carolina are determined to learn every trick in the spell book he left behind. Fast forward to a year later, Emma's life takes a new turn. During junior year, a mysterious new student from San Bernardino catches her eye. He's mysterious, intriguing, and mostly keeps to himself, but why? It's what she wonders every day when they cross paths. Who in Glendale would want to be so secretive, anyway? Bobby Staten-that's who. Due to Bobby's classic leather jacket and dark aesthetic, Emma and her friends constantly joke that maybe he's a vampire and that's the secret he's hiding. It's no longer funny when a series of gruesome killings occur at Verdugo High, described by local officers as a bloody mark found on the necks of the victims. Strangely, this same pattern had appeared earlier in spring at a San Bernardino High School. Coincidence? Rebecca, Emma's other cousin, thinks not. Rebecca quickly suspects a connection and begins investigating Bobby's past and persona. As Emma befriends him, she struggles to believe that someone like Bobby could be capable of crimes so vicious. Rebecca reminds her that one of the only ways to permanently kill a vampire is with a stake through the heart-in much more poetic terms, heart right through Verdugo.
