Every witch returns from the Trials except one.

Valerie Hardy, a gifted witch who hopes to change the world, has dreamed of competing in the Trials since she was a little girl. The winner becomes the next Ascendant, spending the rest of their life alone in service to the community.

Winning is nearly impossible, but that doesn't mean Valerie can't do her best and make friends. Along with talented sweetheart Kiana and nonbinary challenger Blair, Valerie aims to reach the top and prove to herself that she's good enough to do something meaningful with her life.

Valerie has grown up supporting her autistic brother and volunteering as much as she can with her best friend, Daniela. She's ready to have her character, skills, and dedication tested. But making a real difference is about more than being good, and it may require things she doesn't expect.
