The story starts with Nikoda, Audrie, Raz, and Re. Together they were accepted into Mahiya Academy, a school for magic users.
Re and Nikoda share a dorm, and Raz and Audrie share.
Nikoda and Re are step brother and sister. Re was adopted by Nikoda's mother and stepfather.
Audrie and Raz have been friends for 8 years, since Raz's mom and Audrie's dad have been dating.
Nikoda and Re are 14, Audrie and Raz are 13.
