What if someone bonded a dragon outside of Basgiath?

Raven Riorson, not nearly old enough for the quadrant, loves adventures. With sixteen, she decides to run away from her foster parents and make the best of the years she has, because they didn't train her anyway. Wandering over fields and forests, jumping on wagons and stealing from hotel kitchens, she makes her way across the continent. Little did she know that she was about to encounter a dragon, nonetheless one of the biggest alive. Surprisingly, she didnt get torched, and instead bonded that mighty and rare dragon, flying to the war college.

While waiting for judgment, she reunites with her big brother, and meets Liam for the first time.

The teachers, not knowing what else to do, make her cross the parapet and put her to join the lessons if she survived. But does she? Will she make it through the year or will she be another name on the death roll?

Heyy so there WILL be spoilers for Fourth wing, Iron flame and Onyx storm so if you haven't read them, I wouldn't recommend reading this quite yet! but of course, come back when you're finished. This is set a year before violet shows up (yes, I will go that far into the story, and she will still be in the story) During the Aretia Battle right before the execution of Tyrish rebellion, Fen Riorson and a bunch of other members of the rebellion flew to the kingdom of Vaelryn (Who were allies to Navarre) and burnt the city to ash leaving nothing left, except.... Arabella D'Amore is the princess and 7th heir to the Vaelryn throne. King Solias and Queen Casara lived in the public eye and were known for being 'perfect'. They had a perfect government, 'perfect' marriage and 'perfect' kids. But only very few knew what actually happened in that castle for they were anything but perfect, but they sure tried. If a single kid twitched or faltered their smile, they would get a major punishment such as a whip to the back or a beating till you would bleed. Arabella being the youngest or the 'runt' in the family she would get picked on or beaten by her siblings and parents the most. Her oldest brother/heir to the throne was her savior. He would teach her how to fight and ward off her siblings whenever he could. After the kingdom was sent in flames Arabella somehow was left by Fen Riorson and was finally rid of her cruel family... but her brother who she watched get scorched by Fen Riorsons dragon was the only person she loved. He was gone and she had nowhere to go so off into the streets of Navarre she went where she learned to kill and steal and train. She saw conscription day forms and signed up as Marlena Iverson where she meets Bodhi Durran who teaches her to face her past so that she can finally love again.

You've read Liam Mairi's story. You know how it goes. How it ends. But what if there was more to his tale? And what if it included someone already in his story the entire time? She has her own history, her own shameful past, her own secrets. But what if she's destined to change the course of not only his life, but the fate of everyone else on The Continent? And Liam? He cannot tell a soul about her. Not even Xaden Riorson. We follow Liam through his own story whilst keeping a secret that may very well get him killed, alongside every other marked one in Basgaith before Threshing. Trigger warnings: Violence, descriptions of injuries, hints at SA, physical and mental abuse, torture, sexual activities, graphic language and death. If you are sensitive to any of these topics, please consider them before reading on. Author's Note: This story is inspired by the incredible Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. If you have not read Fourth Wing yet, please go read it first, as a lot of context will not make sense if you're not familiar. I am so incredibly proud of this story, I've had this idea since last year and have spent months planning and now writing this version of Liam's life. I do plan to post chapters weekly, but life sometimes gets in the way! (Also if you see any little mistakes A: No you don't and B: I have raging ADD so sometimes editing gets rather boring.) All rights, characters and original story reserved to Rebecca Yarros & Piatkus Publishing.

A dragon without its rider is a tragedy. A rider without their dragon is dead. - Article One, Section One, The Dragon Rider's Codex "Anyone else feel like changing their mind?" Xaden shouts, scanning the remaining rows of cadets with the same shrewd gaze of the navy-blue dragon behind him. "No? Excellent. Roughly half of you will be dead by this time next summer." The formation is silent except for a few untimely sobs from my left. "A third of you again the year after that, and the same your last year. No one cares who your mommy or daddy is here. Even King Tauri's second son died during his Threshing. So tell me again: Do you feel invincible now that you've made it into the Rider's Quadrant? Untouchable? Elite?" No one cheers. Another blast of heat rushes - this time directly at my face - and every muscle in my body clenches, preparing for incineration. But it's not flames... just steam, and it blows back Rhiannon's braid as the dragons finish their simultaneous exhale. The breeches on the first-year ahead of me darken, the color spreading down his legs. They want us scared. Mission accomplished. "Because you're not untouchable or special to them." Xaden points toward the navy dragon and leans forward slightly, like he's letting us in on a secret as we lock eyes. "To them, you're just the prey." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Whose that?" "Rhae Sorrengail, the forgotten daughter. She's Violet's twin, they're nothing alike though. Violet is the calm before a storm, and Rhae is the hurricane. The anger and stubbornness of that woman are insane." "God forbid she and Xaden stay in the same room for too long. Someone would likely end up dead." Started: June 5, 2025. (technically March 24, 2024 bc thats when I started writing it) Finished:

Just about everything is trying to kill Joan Graycastle: the King, the cadets, even some of the Riders Quadrant professors seem out to get her. Her only goal is to stay alive. The longer she's alive, the closer she is to seeing her brother again and the closer she gets to fighting the actual war being waged outside Navarre's borders. The only dragon almost guaranteed to kill her decides to claim her, though, and throws a wrench in all of her plans. "Are you a meal, Josefyne Tauri? Or are you a rider?" - fourth wing x oc
