The Witches of Auraterra

In Auraterra, every girl knows the day she turns nineteen will mark the beginning of her reckoning. That's when the Wardrums sound. That's when the magic within her is tested, weighed, and ranked. That's when she is sent-whether from mountaintop sanctuaries or crumbling coastal towns-to the Collegium of Witches, a grueling military academy where femininity is forged into force.

Here, every woman is trained in combat, both magical and physical. Every woman is expected to master the Core Gifts: minor elemental control, protective wards, basic battle spells, and the dreamwalking that binds all witches to each other and to the land. But it's the emergence of one's Specialty that shapes her future. Some learn to command storms, others bend time, slip through shadows, or manipulate bone. The gifts are unpredictable and dangerous, and must be wielded with discipline.

Shayna-Shay-was a late arrival. She barely passed the spellcasting entrance trials. Her conjurings sputtered, her elemental grids failed, and her instructors whispered that she might be a Burnt Bloom-a witch born with magic that never ignites. But what Shay lacked in controlled spellwork, she made up for with a strange, unruly gift: healing.

She could mend torn flesh with a glance. She revived a hawk crushed under a training weight. One night, she laid hands on a girl who had been hexed to sleep forever and brought her back. Healers were respected-but they were not feared. And fear, in Auraterra, was currency.

So Shay was overlooked. Dismissed.

Until she began doing things she shouldn't have been able to do.
