I bowed my head and pressed a soft kiss to her feet.

She froze.

Her eyes widened... hurt, confusion, disbelief all fighting to surface at once.

"Vanya..." I looked up at her, my own voice cracking. "I'm sorry."

She blinked, a lone tear slipping down her cheek.

"I know I forced you into this marriage," I said, the words tasting like poison on my tongue. "But I swear to God, I had no other choice left. None."

Her lips parted... but no words came out.

"I know you feel something for me," I continued softly. "I've seen it in your eyes... in the way you look at me when you think I'm not watching."

She stiffened.

"But something is holding you back. Something big." I swallowed hard.
"And I'll find what it is. I'll tear through every wall between us... even if it takes my whole damn life."

Her eyes filled again and spilled over.

I placed her feet gently down, then held her hands in both of mine.

"I promise you this, Vanya..." My voice shook, but I didn't hide it. "I will worship the floor you walk on. I will fight every demon that ever touched your life. I will fix every mistake I've made, every one."

A sob slipped from her lips, silent but sharp.

"Please," I whispered, forehead touching her knees. "Forgive me... or at least let me earn it."
