Bitten by an unknown dragon and irrevocably changed from it, Hiccup learns that fate can be far crueler than he ever imagined.

On the eve of facing the Monstrous Nightmare in the Kill Ring, he vanishes-fleeing Berk with Toothless after the bite awakens something dark and untamed within him. Presumed dead, he disappears into the mists of the archipelago, knowing he can never return without endangering not only himself, but his dragon... and his people.

Over the last six years, whispers spread: of a monstrous, nameless rider who frees captured dragons, mercilessly raids hunter camps, with the only proof of his existence being the scorched earth and scales as dark as obsidian he leaves behind. Some call him a child of the Gods. Others, a living curse sent out of Hel herself to plague and pillage the lands.

Haunted by his growing, uncontrollable powers and desperate for a cure, Hiccup follows a trail of elusive dragon myths and unreliable rumors as he fights to keep the little humanity left inside of him.

Along the way, he and Toothless find unlikely allies, unearth impossible truths, and uncover a love they thought they'd never find.

But the past has claws of its own-and Berk is not the only place eagerly awaiting for their turn at bringing down the elusive and untrustworthy supposed 'Master of Dragons.'
