Teenage Harlan Lake talks fast, jokes faster, and doesn't let anyone close enough to ask real questions. At Ryker High, he's known for sharp comebacks, constant detentions, and a friend group as chaotic and rough-edged as the world they live in.

But Harlan's world isn't held together by confidence-it's barely held together at all.

His home life is fractured. His mother is mostly checked out, his past is something he never talks about, and what keeps him going are the distractions: rooftop lunches, late-night parties, inside jokes, and the loyalty of boys who've seen just as much as he has but never say it out loud.

When Katie Moore-the girl who used to be his childhood best friend-moves back into his life, at the age of 14 everything shifts. She remembers the boy he was, not the one who hides behind sarcasm now. And her being with his best friend? That only makes things messier.

Through quiet tension, reckless choices, and an ever-growing need to disappear, Harlan keeps trying to outrun the parts of himself no one sees.
