Fresh from her time at university, Sabine Shaw is determined to make a difference in the lives of the teens she works with as a guidance counselor at Montgomery High School. In particular a freshman girl who seems to want her to think she's more trouble than she's worth. Unperturbed by the girl's behavior and her seemingly absent guardian; Sabine decides that she will see this girl graduate if it is the last thing she does.

When Sabine finally meets the girl's stoic, and undeniably handsome, older brother the pieces begin to fall into place.
