Elias grew up in the city- raised by his grandfather, a retired history teacher, after losing both parents in a vehicular accident at age 10. Despite his grandfather's best efforts to immerse him in Filipino culture, Eli rebelled-thinking folk stories were boring, outdated, or "for the old." After his grandfather's death, Eli found a stack of old field notes, documenting unrecorded festivals and dying rituals. Scribbled among the pages was a note: "There's one dance I could never witness- The Dance of Light, they called it. Said to keep something in the ocean asleep. Fandango... sa Ilaw." Bored, bitter, curious, and craving purpose, Elias decides to visit the island and see the dance for himself.
