The way people perceive you is based on if you have a Dragon or not, they do not care for your actions if you don't have or if you're dragon is deemed unworthy. A system that was corrupt and awful. 

Every dragon has a different amount of respect that you will get based on size and strength as well as other aspects of the mighty beast.

A egg chooses the person when they are born, the egg hatches on their first birthday after a incubation period, that is when most learn if they have a fighting chance, if the dragon seems good enough when it is young. 

Dragons are part of being Noble or royal, high ranking people are expected to have a dragon and poorer and lower ranking are lucky if they get one. 

But all's not what it seems, is so rarely is. When a young girl's dragon matches her perfectly...but not in a good way.

Children would spend days on end studying just in the hopes that they would get accepted to the Rider School, and those who did get accepted left their homes like kings, followed with respect and well wishes.
