A short story about unexpected connections, the first tentative flickers of love, and the turmoil it brings.
This short story began as a story arc for the Early Birds book, but that story took a different direction and it no longer fit. It's been lying in my 'books in progress' folder for a long time, so I decided to change the name, add some meat to it, and upload it as a short story.

Early Birds
The 141 being snowed under with intel and digital tech they can't decipher, ask Laswell to send them a Digital Specialist to assist them. She is not what Ghost expects and she triggers changes in his life that he never expected to experience. This is a slow burn friendship/love story. I wanted to give Simon 'Ghost' Riley some much needed love, happiness and comfort. The story doesn't follow the events of the Modern Warfare stories, but does borrow details from canon. This is my first attempt at writing for others, so constructive comments are welcome. This is a site for people to share their inspiration and stories. He was a man after his own heart, She was his heartbeat. If he was winter, she was his spring, And he couldn't face it without her. Simon Riley was no stranger to loss. From the brutal murder of his broken family, to the life of every soldier snuffed out by the bullet of a faceless enemy. Having his loved ones, his friends unceremoniously torn away from him never got any easier. It wounded him in ways that, while not visible, cut him deeper than any knife ever could. The toll it took permeated every aspect of his existance, infiltrating his sense of self and dismantling his identity. A once deeply empathetic man found himself surrendering to indifference; suffocating meaningful connections before they had time to breathe. He sought solace in detatching himself from others before they could affect him deeply enough for their eventual loss to shatter what little humanity he clung to. Over time, a callous layer formed around Simon's heart- as though an impenetrable shield encased him. Throbbing emotional wounds slowly turned into numb scars, each one an indelible mark on his soul. It felt like he was drowning; being pulled under by an invisible undertow into the depths of sorrow. Every breath became a battle, each gasp a desperate attempt to surface above the crushing waves of loss. Through the suffocating darkness, there was no tranquility. No respite from the insatiable abyss that consumed joy and drowned laughter. It wasn't any one thing that slowly began to chip away at Simon's carefully constructed walls. By the time he became the cornerstone of Task Force 141, very few people knew the man beneath it all. The real Simon Riley, that was until, she came along. Story will include slowburn and erotica. Insane. That's what the other soldiers called Analaya. She was almost... too happy to be there, in the midst of chaos, killing. Slipping out of 'suicide' missions, bruised and bloody, but always alive. Always smiling. And always alone. Until one night there's a fault - and it leads Laya to meeting a team just as messed up as her. 'There's no better place for crazy than 141.' ᶻ 𝗓 𐰁 .ᐟ But among finding friends in her new task force, she also finds stronger feelings - hate - for her Lieutenant; Simon Riley. He's always there, with his dry remarks and watching eyes. But she hates him because he sees something behind her unbreakable facade. She had ran. Maybe... technically 'missing' to some. And Ghost continues to uproot her of her old life, bringing up memories that were supposed to remain forgotten, bringing up problems. Problems that cause her to stumble. And Laya never falls. Khalil Gibran Simon Riley wasn't a religious man and never believed in angels, but he definitely believed in demons. He'd met them personally. Now essentially dead to the world, he existed, haunted by the demons of his own tragic past, so the idea of there being any goodness left in the world, was an abstract concept that only seemed to apply to other people. As far as he was concerned, the curse that had tainted his whole sorry life, meant that he never would have that opportunity to experience anything other than pain and sorrow. So when the universe, in it's warped sense of timing, finally thought it appropriate to bring him an angel, his negativity and suspicious nature, almost allowed it to pass him by. This work was originally meant to be a short story inspired by "Cry of a Banshee by Blackbriar". However, it merged into another story arc I was writing, and grew from there. Sensitivity warning - story does have some dark elements of violence and talk of suicide.Complete
