The city of Merman

In 1909, blind priest Birger Gudmundsson receives a visitor at his church, sharing with him an old newspaper clipping from 1908. The article details the reappearance of the ghost ship Mermaid-a vessel that vanished a century ago, only to dock at the local quay for four nights before disappearing again. The ship's likeness to Naglfar, the Norse ship of the apocalypse, terrifies the locals. But Birger claims he was aboard that very ship-and begins to tell his tale.

Growing up as an orphan in the church, Birger first learned about Vineta after discovering a bone flute washed ashore. Soon after, he began dreaming of a merman trapped beneath the waves, singing a sad song, about the lost city of Vineta under the waves, that said to resurface once every century with its treasure and its...Elixir.
