Edited Synopsis - The Monsters We Are
Emma Popović-now known as Emma Davies, after compelling a human couple to become her parents-was forced to flee her hidden supernatural world when hunters, wolves, and a powerful witch launched a deadly attack. Vulnerable and on the run, her vampire family escapes into the city, desperate to protect a secret hybrid child and start over.
Meanwhile, Austin Miller is falling apart. He's a rare, terrifying breed-part human, part enormous skeletal monster-and he doesn't understand what he is or why he exists. Wracked with guilt after accidentally killing someone he once loved, Austin is drowning in self-loathing, depression, and fear of his own power.
Now living in the city, Emma and her friends struggle to adapt to human society and search for meaning beyond survival. Their path leads them to Newoaks High, a mysterious school where they discover they are not the only supernatural beings hiding in plain sight.
While facing enemies, secrets, and inner demons, Emma and Austin find something neither of them expected: love. But their bond is tested by Stephen-Emma's childhood friend and fellow vampire-whose hidden feelings for her spark a dangerous rivalry. Young Anthony finds out that it is up to him and Emma to save this new world with great powers that he had no idea he had, and make it home before anybody suspects a thing. Told from a first-person point-of-view, it goes into detail about the thought processes of a young man who has everything to lose. The protagonist deals with real life struggles every day, including the death of his friend, his dad who left him at an early age, and the pain of seeing his little sister being hurt by her boyfriend. He also has to take charge and become a hero for those who can't against an unwavering bully in a far-away world.
