A Series of Embarrassing Monsters: The Misadventures of Evangeline
Abandoned by the famous novelist who gave birth to her, Evangeline is being raised in a trailer park by a scruffy cat who smells like burnt toast, and the wind-up chambermaid (with key and torsion spring built-in) who found her in a laundry hamper. The teen years of a misunderstood artistic genius are tough. Her dreams of becoming a writer got quashed in infancy, and she only manages to earn a few crumbs of approval after she pivots to ballet. Too bad they come from Miskomin, the cheeky liar who lives a few doors down. As Evangeline's adolescence unfolds, the appearance of an unexpected competitor erodes her burgeoning self-confidence, and a predatory artistic director attempts to rewrite her entire world. Her desperate reactions to these influences and her subsequent return to storytelling bring her inner demons to life. Literally. Eager to master herself, Evangeline tackles a series of monsters, operates a murderous sewing machine, and befriends a sentient doll. Her misadventures help unearth latent abilities and force her relationship with neighbour and frenemy, Miskomin, to undergo a surprising evolution. As her creative journey unfolds, Evangeline gains the understanding and experience she needs to face the final boss: Herself. Will she learn to look beyond the artist she wants to be and accept the person she is?
