Charlotte "Charlie" Hayes is a quiet, cold, distant and reserved high school freshman who has problems at school because of bullying and endless torment, and at home because of her single mother's physical abuse towards her. This has been an everyday routine for her and she had even thought of what the world would be like without her daily.

That is, until one day, she meet Ashton Holt, an ordinary sophomore who spent his life hanging out with his friends casually. His world is imperfect too, but brighter, freer. When their paths cross at school , Ashton sees something in Charlie no one else does: life beneath the scars.

Charlotte and her sister are no strangers to sadness. The rip your heart out and smash it to the ground type of sadness. But when they moved a thousand miles away from everything they knew, they thought they'd escape that constant ache. Instead, with the assistance of their new classmates, it soon becomes their lives once again. They discover parts of themselves that were better left untouched--parts that will say anything to get them longing for an escape from their own minds. The voices in their heads pounce on their weakness and drag them deeper into the darkness until they can no longer remember what the sky was like. If they don't find a way out of their voices' clutches, they won't see that sky again.
