In a world where heroes wear gold and villains wear shadows, Aurelian-the golden poster boy of the Hero Syndicate-has spent years fighting Vex, the terrifying chaos-wielding villain who threatens society's fragile order. Or so he's been told. But after a mission goes sideways, Aurelian is captured by Vex. Not tortured. Not killed. Just... kept. And the longer Aurelian stays in Vex's domain, the more cracks he starts to see in the narrative he's lived by. Why does Vex care about the civilians more than the Syndicate ever did? Why does he flinch at blood? Why does he know Aurelian's real name? And why does Aurelian's heart beat faster when Vex gets too close? "You think you know what justice is?" Vex growled, pacing like a caged storm. "You've been spoon-fed a story since you were twelve." Lucien tugged at the cuffs binding him to the steel chair, lip bloody, eye swelling. "And you're just some misunderstood anti-hero? Save it." Vex leaned down, so close Lucien could see the gold flecks in his storm-gray eyes. "If I'm the monster, why are you the one chained up by your own people?" Silence. Except for thunder rolling in the distance. "You don't want the truth," Vex whispered, voice like broken glass and midnight. "You want someone to hate. Even if that someone is the only one who ever gave a damn about you."
