The Splice of The Realms
In a world divided into four groups, there is a role for everyone. Every group has their own realm found in each corner of the country they share. The top right corner has the largest population. There lives the people of the Mystery Realm (M.R.) They're the police force, detectives and prosecutors. They're the only realm which carries weapons of any kind. However, they don't kill. While they do value law and order, they don't like violence and tend to avoid it. The bottom left corner has the second largest population. The people there are born with unique powers. They're called the Supernatural Realm (S.R.) They tend to be optimistic and stubborn. They value relationships and would do anything to keep the people they love safe. The top left and bottom right corners are tied in regards to population, however, that is the only thing they share in common. These two realms couldn't be more different. In the top left corner is the society of the Technologically Enhanced Realm (T.E.R.) The people here develop technology the other realms could only dream of. They don't socialize with others and tend to keep to themselves. They understand complex equations and theories, however, they have a hard time understanding human emotion. Finally, in the bottom right corner lives the peaceful and happy people of the Primitive Harmony Realm (P.H.R.) The people here lead a simple life and believe in nature and its gifts. Because of that, they were blessed with healing abilities and elemental gifts. Additionally, the herbs they grow are just as magical as the people themselves. Their carefree and charismatic tendencies cause them to always believe the best in people, even when they shouldn't. Syd is living on the edge of his broken psyche when he comes across the person he had been waiting his entire life to meet. As things flourish, the rude awakening of the edict "nothing gold can stay" changes the tune of Syd's life as he finds out a truth that is completely devastating. And in the world of mental illness, this is a particularly harsh reality where Syd has to make a difficult decision on what he has to give up in his life. But even a broken drum has to keep beating. The entire story has been published from Chapter 1 to the Epilogue. It is broken into three parts, each quite distinct from the others as Syd's life is altered dramatically. This thing is a labor of love. After completing the story, I realized how much it meant to me personally. I learned things about myself I did not know until I wrote it. I feel as if from writing "Sound of a Broken Drum", my life has changed. In the way I perceive it and in the way I perceive the world around me. This story is not for everyone. There are a lot of people I know who would never want to read something like this. It's not for the apathetic, the privileged, the ones who coast and indulge in the bullshit. I know a lot of people like that. Maybe I wrote it as a means to get away from them. There are certainly people I feel who would read something like this. The mentally-pained, the loners, introverts, the lonely, those who struggle through the everyday things many people take for granted. Those who know too much. And feel too much. I know what that is like. And I know this is why I wrote it. Because we can share each other's experiences through words, no one has to ever feel like they are alone, regardless of how distant the world is. And regardless of how much trash and clutter from society there is in the way of your field of vision, always know there are those few you will find who will make the struggle well-worth it.
