Mallory 'Lory' Gilbert always knew that she was the unwanted child. Her parents made it clear, in their words and their actions. She was the middle child, of course no one cared. She was the burden her parents never asked for. The backup plan in case something happened to her older sister. While Elena was called strong for being in the car when their parents died. Lory was called weak for having any feeling about watching her parents die. Unlike Elena, Lory truly did watch her parents die.
Lory saw their eyes close and the air escaping their bodies. She watched as her father chose Elena to be saved. After that, she knew what her purpose in life was, to be Elena's backup for everyone. So after the accident, she just shut down. She didn't see a point in speaking or having her own wants because no matter what, she wouldn't be able to choose what she wanted anyway.
