A teenaged girl, Meera Roberts hasn't been dealt a good hand at life. She's been bullied, struggled financially her whole life, betrayed by family, and hasn't had many friends while also having absent parents. Her grandmother used to take care of her and was the nicest in her family but died of cancer. Meera is afraid she'll be just like everyone else in her family when her life changes when she meets a boy named Miguel Diaz and they start learning karate from their neighbor, Johnny Lawrence after an incident at a store in where he rescued the two teens from bullies. Karate changes Meera's life in many good ways. It gives her new confidence and makes her a badass when she used to be an insecure girl who let people walk over her. Karate even eventually gets her with her crush. But karate also changes her in bad ways putting her in many temporary bad spots.
