Born an outcast, forged in fire, and marked by a curse, Ovak Oru Oraki has known only a life of brutal self-reliance. Cast out by her own tribe for her unnatural white skin and the mysterious lineage of her shaman-druid warlord father, she became a lone hunter, her every breath a defiance against a world that rejected her. Scarred with the Orcish word "cursed" burned into her back, Ovak transformed her pain into unparalleled power, mastering the forge to craft her bone-and-pelt armor, and perfecting the spear glaive into an extension of her savage will. Now, amidst Grommash Hellscream's invasion of Azeroth, Ovak arrives as a force unto herself. She fights not for the Iron Horde, nor for any faction, but for her own singular glory. A towering white phantom on the back of her monstrous beast, Saki, she plunges into the heart of battle, seeking only the thrill of conquest and the ultimate test of her raw strength. Her fury knows no allegiance, and her pure white eyes, gleaming through the slits of her skull mask, see all enemies as prey. When her path collides with the legendary King Varian Wrynn, the battlefield erupts and the newcoming fel... What follows is a clash of titans, a brutal dance of steel and bone, culminating in a grotesque act of triumph that sends shockwaves through both the Horde and the Alliance. As Ovak flaunts her victory, drawing the curious, amused gaze of Grommash Hellscream himself, Azeroth is forced to reckon with a new, unpredictable power. Is she a harbinger of destruction, a catalyst for change, or simply a lone wolf destined to carve her own bloody legend in a world that never asked for her? Enter the untamed world of Ovak Oru Oraki, where savagery meets cunning, and the line between curse and destiny is forever blurred.

************************************************************************************** An outcast rogue must break a curse put on his fate, or die on his nineteenth birthday. In JOS I set the rogue and con-artist Harric against a foil of warriors in a land threatened by magic and civil war. Whenever possible I turn familiar tropes on their heads: instead of a handsome young Lancelot, I cast a broken-down ex-champion addicted to pain-killing herbs; instead of a dashing Squire Brian, the old knight reluctantly takes an ambitious young woman as squire. Similarly, I re-imagine the standard medieval milieu by infusing aspects of two of my favorite historical periods, Elizabethan England, and The American Frontier. Both eras boast a kind of nationalistic arrogance that borders on hubris, and a magnificent spirit of resourcefulness and re-invention that is fun to play with. SERIES The Jack of Souls is first in a series. I am posting parts of the sequel here now (The Knave of Souls), to help me refine the story.
