Amahle Dlamini, a young Black woman in her late 20s, returns to her late grandmother's crumbling beachside inn in a forgotten South African town called Saltreach, hoping to sell it and return to the city. But the town is strange.

The sea talks to her in dreams.

The waves leave messages in shells.

And people whisper that the ocean remembers things that even the living have forgotten.

Amahle is drawn to the water-and to Jun Sakai, a quiet, reclusive Japanese marine biologist who lives alone in a small lighthouse at the farthest edge of the bay. He claims he's only there to study deep-sea migration patterns.

But she suspects there's more.

Why does he speak to the sea at night?

Why does he avoid mirrors?

And why do the seagulls circle over his lighthouse only when she's near?

When a strange journal surfaces-written in a mix of isiZulu and Japanese-and the tide begins to rise higher each night, Amahle and Jun are forced to uncover a forgotten legend about love, sacrifice, and a curse older than the shoreline.

As they unravel the past, feelings bloom between them-slow, aching, full of wonder and fear. But the sea is watching. And it never forgets what it's owed
