Welcome to Clarkville - a small town on the banks of the Mississippi, where our hero studies. Meet Larry Botter - a boy who makes teachers grab their hearts, and girls giggle into their handkerchiefs. He lies like he breathes. He reads books about pirates, but still writes his own name with mistakes. He bargains like an old shopkeeper, fights like a younger brother, and brings a new catastrophe to school every morning. But don't rush to write him off as a fool. Because under his tousled head and pirate grin hides a real hero - even if a little clumsy. And maybe that's exactly the kind of hero we all are missing.

In front of you is not just a story about a school in the South in the 1840s - it's a cheerful, bold, and tearfully touching chronicle of that very age when life feels like an endless adventure, and every morning - like a new voyage on a spring river.
