A deadly fungal infection originating in Europe turns humans into decomposing, blind, deaf, yet smell-sensitive zombies. The infection is transmitted only through bites. The main character, Riven, a 17-year-old survivalist genius raised by WHO scientist parents, is trapped in a boarding school in Austria when the outbreak begins. Her goal is to reunite with her parents in Canada. Along the way, she forms an unbreakable bond with Theo, a tall, street-smart, emotionally intelligent boy; his five-year-old sister; and their puppy. The four journey across Europe together, surviving 10 months of chaos to reach the safe zone in Canada.
