The morning Marlena Evans Black returned home from Greece, the sunlight hit the floor of their townhouse like a warm kiss.

John Black had made sure of it. He had opened the curtains in every room, even the ones she wouldn't go into yet. Light, he told himself, would help. Light was honest. Safe. He didn't want her walking back into shadows-not after what she'd survived.

Marlena stepped inside slowly. She wore a dark blue sweat suit that made her look fragile, though John knew better. She had survived Megan Hathaway's twisted captivity, the chamber, the drug-induced darkness. She had clawed her way back to life.

But surviving didn't mean healing.

Not yet.

"Home," John whispered, pressing a kiss to her temple.

She didn't answer. Her eyes scanned the room like a stranger seeing a museum of her former life.

She felt his surprise. She felt his light extinguish as he died. Then there was nothing. Nothing. Her head was swimming like it was underwater. She couldn't move. She couldn't move. Her vision blurred, a man was speaking but she couldn't hear his words. She felt the sword in her chest, but it wasn't there. He killed him. He killed him. Breathe. Did she stop? Breathe. The man, she could hear him speaking. What was he saying? Breathe. She inhaled a deep breath. And another. Then another. Things started to clear. "Breathe. That's right," the warrior coaxed. She started to take another settling breath, and his face came more into focus. The first thing she noticed was his piercing green eyes. She had never seen eyes quite like that before. She stared into them, mesmerized. He mimicked a breath and she took it with him. She was coming back. "I will not hurt you," the man kneeling before her promised. Anna knew better than to believe him. What was it he had said? Oh. "You...you said...you said 'no witnesses'." She was shaking violently. She took another deep breath. "Ah, " he uttered in acknowledgment. "You are not a witness, you are the treasure

Malachi had never believed in the idea of fate-not until the moment he first laid eyes on Freya. It wasn't anything dramatic. No slow-motion entrance. No perfectly timed background music. She was just there, quietly tucked into a corner of a bustling café, her attention fixed on a worn sketchbook and the lines she carefully traced across its pages. She didn't look around or try to be seen. She was completely content in her own little world-and that was exactly what made Malachi stop mid-step. There was something magnetic about her. The way she carried herself-calm, self-contained, almost unapproachable-wasn't from arrogance, but from an inner peace he couldn't quite understand. She wore headphones, one earbud in, the other draped over her shoulder like she couldn't decide if she wanted to be part of the world or escape from it entirely. To anyone else, she might have seemed like just another quiet girl minding her business. But to Malachi, she was an unanswered question he suddenly needed to solve. From that instant, it wasn't a matter of if he'd try to know her-it was how. Something in his gut told him this wasn't going to be easy. She didn't seem like the type to trust quickly. She had walls, and he could sense them. But something about her made him want to climb those walls, no matter how high they were. He hadn't even heard her voice yet. And still, Malachi knew: He needed to get close to her. He needed to know who she was. And he'd do whatever it took to make that happen.

Jaren is your typical nerdy high schooler. Straight As and only enough friends to count on two fingers, he unexpectedly makes a third. But this friend is nothing like him. Confident and carefree, John is a lively change that Jaren quickly welcomes into his life. But as their relationship develops, Jaren wonders if the boy he spends all of his time with is really who he says he is. John's facade starts to waver and when Jaren finds out the truth, it is the last thing he ever expected. *************** "You okay?" the blond asked softly, close enough that his hair tickled Jaren's cheek. He nodded slowly as he drank in John's face. He was beautiful. Those eyes, greener than the willow's leaves. He didn't miss how they lingered on his lips. The air was thick with tension but Jaren welcomed it. He'd never felt this sensation before. Was this where he finally admitted to himself he liked the guy in front of him, not just in a friends way? John's eyes moved back to his and there was something in them that wasn't there just a moment before. A sort of yearning, a question. The way Jaren inhaled sharply was answer enough.
