Spina bifida is a nervous system disorder that occurs when a baby's neural tube fails to develop or close properly during early pregnancy. It is a type of neural tube defect (NTD) where the spine and spinal cord do not form correctly, leading to a gap in the spine that may expose the spinal cord and nerves. It can range in severity, with the most common and serious form being myelomeningocele,* in which the spinal cord and nerves protrude through an opening in the spine in a sac exposed to amniotic fluid. Symptoms and complications vary person to person, and may include paralysis, incontinence**, hydrocephalus***, and cognitive impairments****, depending on the location and severity of the defect.
