She whispered, her voice trembling and eyes glossy, pulling the blanket close - not to hide her body, but to shield her heart from what this meant for them. "You're my best friend." But it was already too late - too late when, just seconds before, their arms had entwined and only whispers filled the room, not when she had given herself that way. In that heavy room, where time seemed to slow, their hearts beat out of sync, and the silence between them spoke louder than any words. He looked at her, unable to answer, knowing that night had changed them - forever.

When her bestie's childhood friend Archer gets caught in a messy breakup that spirals into public drama, Amara is asked to keep an eye on him to keep him out of trouble. What she didn't expect was how quickly he'd start showing up everywhere-uninvited, unfiltered, and under her skin. ****************************************************** Archer had sprawled across her bed without asking, one ankle hooked over the other, fingers absently gripping the sheets like he owned the space. His hair kept falling into his eyes as he grinned at her - too casual for someone who'd just invited himself in. "If you keep looking at me like that, I'm gonna start thinking you like me," he mused, voice low and teasing, eyes flicking over her face as if searching for a crack in her expression. Amara exhaled slowly, the sound deliberate. She shifted in her chair, just enough to show she wasn't rattled, closing a little of the distance without moving closer. "I'm looking at you because you're sitting on my bed," she said flatly. His grin deepened, almost sheepish, a flicker of something vulnerable hiding in it. "Well... you didn't tell me to get out." She tilted her head, eyes narrowing, a quiet challenge behind them. "You didn't ask if you could stay." He leaned back on his hands, the pose lazy but his gaze fixed on her, heavy enough to thicken the air between them. "You'd miss me if I left," he murmured, the words half a whisper-like he was testing the truth of it more than making a joke. She studied him for a long moment, really studied him, as if peeling back the bravado to see what sat underneath. Her eyes softened, but her scrutiny didn't fade. She leaned forward a fraction. "Would you miss you if you left?" ❤️ Each character's boards available on my public pinterest account: https://pinterest.com/elliebcarterbooks
