It's the 34th century, and humanity has taken over hundreds of star systems, making up two areas called "The Bubble". 

A small group of kooky independent pilots who call themselves The Hermits are considered a lighthearted nuisance at best, and "utterly destructive to interstellar diplomacy" (by Empress Arissa Lavigny-Duval) at worst. Still, they go where adventure calls, wherever and however that may be.
