A male mermaid (Samuel) is stranded in a muddy pond inland after a hurricane sweeps him from Point Nemo far into flatlands.
Alen, a gay Hispanic teen, is camping with his strict, homophobic Catholic family who speak only Spanish.
Alen, suffocated by family pressure, escapes to swim in the pond.
Alen accidentally kicks Samuel underwater, discovering him.
They form a slow-burn, cautious bond: Alen brings food, Samuel teaches Alen how to hold his breath underwater, Alen learns to speak softly with the pond wildlife (Steave the muskrat).
Alen finds a connection with someone for the first time.
Alen's family discovers Samuel and sees dollar signs. They hunt and kill Samuel for profit, treating him as a demon/freak.
