Living in a world where glimpses of people from the past or future going about their lives show through worn-down time isn't interesting when it's always been that way. People call them echoes―incorporeal, untouchable, and totally harmless traces of other times. They've always just been a fact of life, easy to ignore.

Until Anahera is coming to Nikora and Tijil for help, suddenly able to touch―and being hurt by―something meant to have about as much physical form as a mirage. And then it starts spreading.

When they're forced to leave the school they live in―helped by Athiti and Edie―to look for an answer, everything starts going wrong. Not everyone's memories align; not every action taken sticks. Something is definitely going on with Tijil. And whatever started with Anahera is seeming like it might have already gone too far to fix.

_________________ Out of nowhere, Mom came around the corner pointing a gun at us. Ginny pointed the one that we found back at her. It was a shocking moment. "What the hell, Virginia and Oakley? What are you guys doing home? I could've killed you guys" Mom says squatting down to our level and grabbing the gun that Ginny had. " I've never held a gun before" Ginny panicked. " what are you guys doing in here? Why are you pawing through my closet?" Mom says. "We want answers!" I say getting up and so did Ginny. " Answers to what?" Mom says trying to put everything back in the box. " Are you kidding? To all of it! Your past everything. We're sick of all the lies" I say. " I don't care what you're sick of. You guys have no right to go through my stuff" Mom says putting the box back under the floorboards. " Don't talk to us about what is right. What is all this? Why are there guns in the house?" Ginny barked. " why do you have to send Maddie away?" I add. " That's between me and Maddie" Mom says. "She's our aunt! Why couldn't we know that? They're are family" I plead for answers. " They're not your guises family. I am your guys family!" Mom snapt. " I just want you to be honest with us" Ginny says. "I have been" Mom says. "Bullshit, Mary!" Ginny snaps. Mom then did the unexpected and slapped Ginny. "Oh my gosh" I say looking between mom and Ginny. ________________________ Oakley and Ginny Miller. Always moving schools every single month basically. 'There's something beyond the mirrors...' She should probably be choosing her majors for college, considering a career, and the direction for the rest of her life. Instead - she's still working at the small town coffee shop where she got her first job. And while commuting from a bigger city to the much smaller town of Briarsfield where she grew up is a pain, Evie likes the stability. The normalcy. Because the dreams or nightmares that Evie had started having a little over a year ago now are anything but normal. Dreams of an endless void of fog. They've persisted and refused to leave her alone now for months. And Evie is haunted by the chilling feeling that she is not alone in the fog. But when the fog suddenly becomes real, weather completely uncommon for Briarsfield at this time of year, Evie wakes up to a sensation of dread. And that something is very different. And very wrong. That something has changed and she's been suddenly put at the epicenter. At the precipice of something life altering. Or world ending.
