The Alistairs admitted the truth. Their fifth is Rose, both silver and gold-called, though her existence must remain a secret from those who'd imprison her or condemn the Alistairs for their change of heart. With Rose operating from the shadows, they fight for both sides: to free the priests and protect the living and the dead from the hunger of the worms.

*** (Excerpt, Alexander's POV) ***

Rose laughed. "She wasn't cruel, just bossy. She kept telling me to find privacy and not to tell anyone that she was contacting me."

"Why?" Gabriel asked.

"She didn't say. Please don't ever tell her I told you."

"The priests make secrecy their policy in everything," I said. "What would you have done if I wasn't here?"

Would you have kept her a secret from us, Rose?

Her warm fingers ran over the nape of my neck. "I'd have been even more upset that you weren't here."

Too cute.

She was going to be the death of me. Eyes that begged me to come closer while she put her hand on my chest, warning me off. Climbing on top of me, but keeping the blanket between us. And for the first time in my life I wanted something bad enough that I was afraid to push for it.

"Don't worry that we'll step between you and Beatrice," I said. "Build trust with her however you see fit."

She gave me a sweet smile.

When was Gabriel going to get off the damn call? I'd had Rose to myself for all of two seconds before the world interrupted.

"Tell her sometime that you hate us," Gabriel suggested. "If you want to build trust with her."

Rose promptly frowned. "I'd rather not."

"One day, spit on Gabriel in her presence," I piled on. "She'll kiss your cheek."

"Did she always hate you like this? Why?"

"Some feelings don't have a good cause. Nothing but one tribe against another," Gabriel said.

Book 4 of The Alpha Series! Cannot be read as a standalone book! Highest rank: #1 in Werewolf genre on 06/11/2019! Amelia Reid and Ivan Romanov were once childhood friends that would see each other every summer. But that all changes when Ivan stops visiting. A few years later, they meet again. But this time, they don't see each other as friends. Join Amelia's journey as she tries to peel back the many layers of Ivan Romanov while finding her place in a completely different world. *** "They show what you've been through, and I think that's beautiful." I whisper back, running my fingers through his hair. "Hell, you're ten times stronger than I could ever be." In an instant, he turns around to lay on his back with me straddling his waist. I blush at the position, his hand caressing my heated cheek adoringly. His emerald gems hold an array of emotions, flickering across too quickly for me to catch and decipher. So, I choose to admire him instead. I meant what I said. Ivan is so breathtakingly handsome that it hurts sometimes. His midnight black hair is always tousled sexily, eyes bright and alert, there's two freckles by his right brow and one by his chin. His lips are full and most of the time they're either in a frown or a straight line, but I manage to catch several small smiles throughout the day. He's quite muscular but whenever he holds me I feel safe and protected, as if I'm in a soft cocoon. "You don't need to be strong." His low murmur snaps me out of my trance. "You have me, I'll always protect you." "You protect me from the world and I'll protect you from yourself, deal?" I smile softly when he laughs, nodding in agreement. She said and her face turned ecstatic and I blinked and shook my head. "No, please, I need you to tell my mother that I didn't mean to do do this to myself." I took a hard gulp and met the young girls eye. "Please. It is killing her." She begged and tried to grab my hand but it went through me. "Fine, which one is she?" I asked looking around the restaurant. "The one at the front desk... her name is Maria." She said following me as I walked back towards the front. "A? Where are you going?" Ivory asked and I just held up my hand. "Hi, are you Maria?" I asked and saw the girl nod. "Yes, how can I help you?" She asked with what I can tell was a fake smile. "I know this is going to sound crazy... but your daughter is here." "Mina." The dead girl piped in and I looked over at her. "My daughter is at school." She said and looked around where I had glanced. "Mina is here... I can speak to the dead, she wants me to tell you something."

"Who's out there?" One of the men yelled. Of course only silence met them. I remained quiet and waited for the group to start moving again. "Maybe it was just an animal." Someone whispered. The person, who I assumed was the captain of the small squad, signaled for them to walk again. They clearly showed fear as they kept going; brandishing their weapons to guard themselves with. "Two are holding lanterns. I'll tell you when you're too close to them." I heard my friend whisper in my ear. I followed the men as I picked up another branch and waited for the right time to break it. They continued to walk through the forest, turning their heads in every direction as if an animal might lunge at them and rip their throats out. I guess in a way I was going to do that. "Go back a few feet." My friend whispered. I carefully distanced myself from the group and waited. "Where is she?" I quickly snapped the stick as soon as he finished asking the question. They stopped and two soldiers raised their lanterns to shine its light in the darkness. I quickly hid behind a tree before both of them turned where I was. A low frustrated growl came from one of the men, "The girl's playing with us. She's out here following our every move." How paranoia can cloud the mind. At nine years old, Silver decided to leave her village for the forest. Since then, she's been hunted; everyday is a fight for her life, every breath she takes could be her last, but she's determined to stay alive. Her life isn't the kind anyone would want to live but she's managed to survive this long so, what's a few more years?
